In 1672, Jan van der Heijden(known as the Dutch Leonardo da Vinci) invented together with his brother Nicolaas the fire apparatus. Until then, it took a row of men passing buckets of water to fight a fire. The brothers designed a pump enforced with iron rings. Via a second linen tube, water was transported to the fire apparatus and via a pressure pump transported to the nozzle.
